The National Institute of Education invites suitable applications for the position of Research Fellow on a 12-month contract at the Natural Sciences and Science Education Academic Group. Project Title: Fusion Science for Clean Energy: Gamma-ray Spectroscopy diagnostic for WEST [NRF 3/23 SSV] Project Introduction: As part of our Fusion Science for Clean Energy programme, we have two openings for Research Fellow to undertake experimental research on Runaway Electron (RE) beams in the WEST tokamak and in a dense plasma focus device using high-rate gamma-ray spectroscopy. RE beams typically occur during tokamak plasma disruptions and in pinched plasma disruptions in dense plasma focus devices. Bremsstrahlung scattering of these energetic electrons orbiting within the machine produce gamma-rays (of energy up to ~20 MeV) – making Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy (GRS) one of the most essential diagnostics for experimental studies of RE beams. Because they can have a large amount of energy, RE beams represent a serious risk of damage to the tokamak. Moreover, this risk increases as the size of machine increases. Consequently, research on RE beams is becoming increasingly important as the size of tokamaks will likely continue to increase over the coming decades. The GRS diagnostic measurements planned for WEST are aimed at understanding and minimizing the damage risk posed by RE beams. GRS diagnostics will be developed and tested initially in Singapore on a dense plasma focus device which also produces gamma-rays due to plasma instabilities. Requirements Essential A PhD in Physics, Nuclear Engineering or related field Experience in the areas of radiation detection, radiation imaging and/or nuclear instrumentation. Experience with large scintillation detectors/calorimeters, especially LaBr3(Ce). Design of detector systems for gamma-rays and/or neutrons. Digital Pulse Processing for nuclear radiation detectors. Experience performing Monte Carlo simulations with GEANT4 or MCNP. Strong programming ability in Python, C/C++or other languages. Demonstrated ability to conduct independent scientific research and produce impactful publications. Have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Have three, or more, years relevant experience beyond PhD or customary highest degree appropriate to physics, nuclear engineering, or related field. Able to travel internationally (especially between Singapore and France). Will need to help in all aspects of project management from procurement of equipment and consumable to progress/final report writing. Preferred Some knowledge of tokamaks or other nuclear fusion devices is desirable. Ability to work with Physicists and Engineers having a wide range of expertise. Solid knowledge of MATLAB and OriginPro. Good organizational skills Able to work within given deadlines with an eye for details. Able to work independently with minimum supervision. Able to help in supervision of Research Fellow and Ph.D. students. Responsibilities Work on development of Gamma Ray Spectroscopy (GRS) diagnostics. Test GRS on Plasma Focus Device in NIE/NTU. Transfer and setup GRS on WEST tokamak in France. Perform GRS measurements during WEST experimental campaigns. Analyse GRS results to obtain the Runaway Electron energy spectrum. Application Applicants (external and internal) will apply via Workday. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified. Closing Date Closing date for advertisements will be set to 14 calendar days from date of posting. Hiring Institution: NIE A research-intensive public university, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has 33,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Engineering, Business, Science, Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Graduate colleges. It also has a medical school, the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, established jointly with Imperial College London. NTU is also home to world-class autonomous institutes – the National Institute of Education, S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Earth Observatory of Singapore, and Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering – and various leading research centres such as the Nanyang Environment Water Research Institute (NEWRI) and Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N). Ranked amongst the world’s top universities by QS, NTU has also been named the world’s top young university for the past seven years. The University’s main campus is frequently listed among the Top 15 most beautiful university campuses in the world and has 57 Green Mark-certified (equivalent to LEED-certified) buildings, of which 95% are certified Green Mark Platinum. Apart from its main campus, NTU also has a campus in Novena, Singapore’s healthcare district. Under the NTU Smart Campus vision, the University harnesses the power of digital technology and tech-enabled solutions to support better learning and living experiences, the discovery of new knowledge, and the sustainability of resources.
