Thomson Reuters’ Text Metadata and Services (TMS) product and engineering teams are responsible for enriching TR’s product offerings within content acquisition and processing as well as news feed. The use cases in these domains are interesting for Text Analysis, with users expecting to discover new information in sources previously unknown/unseen. From lawyers to investigators (criminal, due diligence, etc.), these professionals need to discover pertinent information (linked data). Our 2024 development roadmap is rich with features and functionalities as well as research and discovery opportunities to explore. Attracting and hiring Ph.D. students and MSc recent graduates allows us to assess and ideally productionize a larger set of these ideas. Basic Qualifications: PhD student or MSc recent graduate in a discipline relevant to NLP/IR/ML/Statistics, Practical and relevant experience building NLP/IR/ML systems, from ideation to implementation, Software engineering skills for prototyping, Proficiency in implementing solutions using Python, DL frameworks, and relevant tools Experience in using code collaboration and versioning systems such as GitHub Familiarity with cloud tools such as Amazon AWS, MS Azure Data-driven problem-solving and decision-making mindset, Curious and innovative disposition capable of proposing outside-the-box solutions, Comfortable in communicating (verbal and written) complex AI solutions to audiences with diverse technical backgrounds. Preferred qualifications: Ability to translate academic research into working prototypes and experience experimenting with novel NLP/IR/ML models to solve real-world problems, Self-driven attitude and ability to work with limited supervision, Team player and comfortable to collaborate with internal team members and external stakeholders, Comfortable in working in fast-paced, agile environments managing uncertainty and ambiguity, Publications at relevant venues such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, KDD, or similar venues are a bonus. The preferred length of an internship position is 8 months. Tentative internship projects: Below you can find summaries of a small subset of ideas we will be investigating in 2024. Depending on the time of onboarding and length of internship other projects with similar themes and topics can be considered for the selected intern. Document Review projects: Document Classification Summarization: Description: In this project, we aim to develop a sophisticated document classification and summarization system tailored for merger and acquisition (MA) deals. The primary objective is to automate the extraction of critical information from voluminous MA documents, enhancing efficiency and decision-making in the due diligence process. Utilizing advanced natural language processing (NLP) techniques, our system will categorize MA documents into relevant classes and based on classification further information extraction and summarization will happen. Named Entity Recognition and Resolution: Description: We are embarking on an ambitious project to develop a cutting-edge Entity Identification and Resolution System that transcends domain boundaries, with a primary focus on domains such as legal, public records, tax, and other specialized fields. This involves implementing state-of-the-art NER models that can accurately identify and classify entities, including but not limited to organizations, individuals, locations, legal entities, citations, patents, and trademarks adopting the latest advancements in contextual embeddings, pre-trained language models, and transfer learning techniques to enhance entity recognition across domains. We leverage techniques from the fields of Information Retrieval (IR), Named Entity Recognition (NER), recommendation systems, classification, LLMs, AI explainability, and user-centric design.
