School of Electrical Electronic Engineering (EEE) is seeking a research engineer (RE) passionate about spearheading the discovery of new physics in emerging materials, especially pertaining to the development of compact, high-brightness X-ray sources. In particular, the RE will explore techniques to miniaturize particle accelerators in free-electron-driven X-ray sources. Our objective is to realize features currently available only in large scale X-ray facilities in a table-top setup. Compact, high quality X-ray sources have potential applications in industrial inspection, medical imaging and treatment, forensics, security inspection, and would also have a transformative impact on fundamental science (where X-rays have been responsible for 25 Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry and Physiology/Medicine). Our research takes place at the boundary of quantum optics, particle waveshaping and nanomaterials. Read more about our work at our group website ********. Key Responsibilities: Discover new phenomena and develop new applications pertaining to the miniaturization of particle accelerators and X-ray sources Assist in fundamental research on electron-photon interactions in emerging materials and nanostructures Publish in world-class journals on topics related to nanophotonics and quantum physics Assist in supervision of undergraduate students Job Requirements: Bachelor’s in physics, engineering, mathematics or related field Excellent English verbal/written communication skills Strong academic credentials and keenness to keep learning Passion for fundamental research and discovering new physics Highly productive and self-motivated in both independent work as well as teamwork Prior research experience on related topics is a bonus We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified. Hiring Institution: NTU A research-intensive public university, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) has 33,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Engineering, Business, Science, Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences, and Graduate colleges. It also has a medical school, the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, established jointly with Imperial College London. NTU is also home to world-class autonomous institutes – the National Institute of Education, S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Earth Observatory of Singapore, and Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering – and various leading research centres such as the Nanyang Environment Water Research Institute (NEWRI) and Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N). Ranked amongst the world’s top universities by QS, NTU has also been named the world’s top young university for the past seven years. The University’s main campus is frequently listed among the Top 15 most beautiful university campuses in the world and has 57 Green Mark-certified (equivalent to LEED-certified) buildings, of which 95% are certified Green Mark Platinum. Apart from its main campus, NTU also has a campus in Novena, Singapore’s healthcare district. Under the NTU Smart Campus vision, the University harnesses the power of digital technology and tech-enabled solutions to support better learning and living experiences, the discovery of new knowledge, and the sustainability of resources.
