What is the focus of the role? As a Senior Staff Engineer in the Engineering Excellence CoE, your role involves addressing complex, unresolved software engineering challenges at our company, Telstra. Your responsibilities span from conducting experiments and nurturing new technologies to demonstrating their effectiveness for production use, thereby driving innovation and technological advancement within the broader software engineering community at Telstra. You’re a hands-on staff engineer and will write production-grade software. Key Responsibilities As a Senior Staff Engineer, you apply your recognised very deep expertise and breadth of experience in the Software Engineering domain to: Consistently write production-ready code that accounts for edge cases and errors, which can be used as examples of best practice by other engineers by being easily testable and understood; actively model a bias towards self-documenting code. Influence organization-wide testing strategy and work with teams by using quality metrics to identify gaps and recommend solutions that are in accordance with accepted testing frameworks and the testing pyramid. Use systematic debugging to diagnose all issues within a set of related domains. Foster a culture of observability across several teams and help them use operational data to improve the stability and performance of their domains. Work across teams to foster an architecture that enables iterative, autonomous development and future scaling; provide guidance to multiple teams in anticipation of future use cases, helping them make design decisions that minimize the cost of future changes. Actively collaborate with the security team, to foster and model a security-first mindset and apply the organization's security strategy across multiple teams. Partner with product owners to build a culture of priority setting and urgency in alignment with organizational strategy by reviewing cross-team work and providing guidance to ensure its appropriately broken down, prioritised, and dependencies are well understood by all involved teams and stakeholders. Demonstrate and influence effective decision-making and responsible actions, without having the total picture to handle risk, change, and uncertainty across several teams during the routine business, as well as when in high-pressure situations. Build strong commercial capability across multiple teams by modeling well-developed commercial thinking, balancing cost and value to decide the most economic action that delivers good outcomes. Actively build a culture of knowledge sharing and documentation that is based on giving and receiving positive and constructive feedback; use this as a base for continuous learning and capability building. Significantly contribute to function and organisation strategy, practices, and planning by drawing on your expertise and thorough understanding of the work across multiple team domains. Use a digital product mindset to recognize product opportunities and differentiators in relation to the competition; help define and create new product abilities by changing technical strategy or constraints. Actively models Telstra’s values and facilitates inclusive discussions across multiple teams that create goal-driven alignment with organisational strategy and principles, as well as identifying actionable continuous improvement opportunities. Maintain a very high level of capability in software engineering, including new and emerging technologies, tools, approaches, and processes so that you can model continuous learning and actively provide coaching and mentoring of other software engineering team members. About You We're looking for someone who has… Proven years of hands-on experience in software development with a strong focus on cloud-native technologies, microservices architecture, and secure coding practices. In-depth experience in implementing DevOps practices to automate software delivery pipelines, infrastructure provisioning, and configuration management. Proficiency in multiple programming languages, such as Java, Python, Go, or Node.js with the ability to select the most appropriate language for specific project requirements. Experience in identifying and remediating security vulnerabilities throughout the software development lifecycle (with a thorough understanding of secure coding practices and principles) Demonstrated expertise in distributed systems, networking, software architecture, and software security concepts.
