Job DescriptionUnder supervision of the Associate Director of the Community and Outreach Engagement (COE), the Project Scientist (Catchment Area Data)is responsible for providing expertise in collecting, managing, analyzing, reporting and presenting data used to characterize catchment area, identify priorities for research, community outreach, policy initiatives and addressing social determinants. This position collaborates with the AD for COE to develop and adapt the COE logic model, taking the lead in managing data collection and analysis. This position will also work health system data scientists and cancer clinical trials office to identify gaps in minority accrual to clinical trials. In addition to providing data to cancer center leaders to support research priorities. Lead policy initiatives as identified by COE and population sciences leadership that utilizes data which includes developing white papers and publishing and presenting at conferences and disseminating to community groups.The ideal candidate for this position will hold a Ph.D. in epidemiology or a related discipline, demonstrating expertise in collecting, managing, analyzing, reporting, and presenting data for characterizing the catchment area. Proficiency in utilizing various data sources, communication across diverse teams, and the ability to contribute to research and outreach within the catchment area are key attributes sought.The Project Scientist should possess a strong theoretical knowledge of public health, behavioral sciences, epidemiology, and/or population sciences. Additionally, expertise in running data queries, maintaining data integrity and security, managing logic models, and utilizing database applications is crucial.The candidate should have expertise in assessing racial/ethnic and spatial disparities in cancer screening, incorporating spatial uncertainty into exposure assessment models, conducting geographic analyses for evidence-based cancer control, and analyzing geographic disparities in breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and HPV-related cancers.Excellent communication skills, experience with cancer incidence and mortality dashboards, and familiarity with various health and population data sources are essential. Proficiency in data visualization tools and the ability to work in coalitions to support policy-related projects are also key qualifications.Essential job Duties and Responsibilities:Theoretical knowledge of public health, behavioral sciences, epidemiology and/or population sciences as typically attained by a Masters or doctorate, or an equivalent combination of education and experienceExperience in running data queries and maintaining data integrity and security.Familiarity with developing and managing logic models and creating measures for values in it.Experience using database, word processing and spreadsheet applications such as Access, Excel and MS WordExperience in communicating and collaborating across teams to address and clarify data discrepanciesExcellent interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills (using grammatically correct written English and accurate typing) to interact with diverse populations.Demonstrated experience in working with cancer incidence and mortality dashboards such as SEER*Explorer, CAL*Explorer and CDC’s Cancer StatisticsDemonstrated experience in working with sources of health, population and social determinants of health data such as the California Cancer Registry, Census, American Community Survey, Los Angeles County Health Survey, California Health Interview Survey, CDC’s Population Level Analysis and Community Estimates (PLACES) and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), CalEnviroScreen and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)Experience in building effective data visualization tools such as infographics and presentations created in Powerpoint, Canva, Piktochart or TableauSkills in presenting data to groups, including community audiences.Experience working in coalitions to support policy related projects .Experience writing manuscripts, publishing and presenting.Requirements:Public Health or related discipline.
