Business Need/Purpose of Role: The ESCO Group, LLC (ESCO) a Division of The Weir Group, is hiring a Test Engineer to serve our Portland-based Engineering Teams. We are looking for an energetic, talented, and professional team player who enjoys applying their practical skills to help others solve difficult problems through experimentation. ESCO’s Innovation Center is a workshop and testing lab for concept exploration, product development, and rapid prototyping. The Test Engineer works under the direction of the Technical Supervisor to accomplish tasks related to projects and the work of the Innovation Center. Test Engineer provides technical expertise in all aspects of conducting physical experiments from DOE setup, fixture design, and collect data. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who is able to work safely and autonomously on assigned projects. The Test Engineer is expected to be the subject matter expert for lab equipment, schedule required maintenance, and provide trouble shooting as needed. Objectives Measurement – Key Responsibilities: Serve as the divisional subject matter expert (SME) on design of experiments (DOE) and Statistics. Day to day this means providing coaching and reviewing test designs for the engineers as requested; it doesn’t mean that you need to run every test. We have been pleased with the recent firsthand observation of testing by engineers and feel that this adds a lot of value to their employment experience and helps them to make better decisions faster. Provide leadership for documentation and archiving of test results. Help to further develop ESCO methods of knowledge capture. Contribute to Communities of Practice (CoP) as Testing SME. Collaborate with the Advanced Technology, New Product Development, and Product Teams to advance testing and analysis validation techniques. Scale model testing of bucket and component shapes. Collaborate with Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) Analysts and help to progress this technology for engineering and marketing purposes. Design testing devices for the field and support data collection and analysis. Travel to customer/manufacturing sites. Field travel of ~10% is expected although it can be more/less depending on project mix. Develop/refine data visualization methods to support Innovation Technology objectives. Attend project meetings and provide capability and schedule updates to project managers. Attend brainstorming/visioning meetings as a contributor and testing SME. Support Innovation Center Test Lab activities. Subject matter expert for the use and care of lab equipment Specify requirements for equipment and fixtures. Design new test systems and fixtures to support project needs. E.g. we need more electronic and environmental testing capabilities to support digital product development. Provide technical expertise and recommendations to advance capabilities. Brainstorm, build, and develop prototypes. Work together with Innovation Center team to implement capital improvements and adapt/expand capabilities as needs change. Comply with Weir Safety Health and Environmental (SHE) requirements. Provide input as requested for tracking metrics and monthly update meetings. Help to maintain the Innovation Center as a showcase of ESCO Division capabilities. Job Knowledge/Education and Qualifications: Mechanical Engineering Degree; with 2 years of engineering experience Familiarity with safe operation of metal and wood working hand and machine tools, cutting and welding operations, forklifts and overhead cranes Familiarity in operating data acquisition software such as SOMAT, LabVIEW or other programs Experience programming and setting up robotic equipment and CNC machines Familiarity with MS Office programs; Outlook, Word, Excel Experience using CAD tools, NX experience preferred Additional Requirements: 70% Lab (partial heat) w/ concrete floor, 30% office Travel Requirements: some Must be permanently authorized to work in the United States We take pride in providing a quality workplace and promoting equal opportunities for all.
